World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Upgrades to an item are a way to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it may increase the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Each item has a track to upgrade it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a certain amount.
Item Level
When an item is upgraded, its stats increase in value. The value is the sum of all of its leveled up advantages (attack magic attack, attack defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high, depending on the upgrader and what kind of upgrade you decide to do. This is due to the fact that many perks must be replaced in order for the item to be upgraded.
It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It also serves to limit the amount of PvP gear players are able to wear since PvP is not available at lower levels. Players can see their average item level in their character sheet.
When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the level of an item. It's a useful gauge of an item's worth and how much damage it's capable of causing. The item level can also be used to evaluate items when evaluating a vendor's inventory.
The level of the item can be viewed by pressing the ALT key on a PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the item's full description, including ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.
There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different values and sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This can result in a calculated amount for the item's level, which is typically close to the actual Blizzard level of the item.
However, this isn't the only factor which affects an item's ilvl, since the size of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for example by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Item Stats
The stats of an item are a major part of what determines the value of an item for players. The game uses them in a variety of ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The stats of a base weapon are boosted by the weapon's stat modifications, which are themselves enhanced by the player's level.
The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers can be upgraded many times, at higher costs.
Another method to alter the stats of an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges just like the other methods of rerolling.
In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which of the available stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However, all items will have at least one stat within the range, unless they are a unique item or a God Roll from a raid boss.

But as with base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item basis, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't show all possible stats gained or lost at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player can increase the likelihood of locating items, the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is more advantageous in the early game, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chances of success when upgrading items with the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the item. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
The shields, armor and weapons come with the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on their material type) for a further +40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Certain items, like the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be outfitted to increase the damage of any ability that is able to deal damage by 5%. These items can be purchased from the shop, or they can be made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Upgrades to items can be costly and not all upgrades will be successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chance of success or stop themselves from losing an item if the upgrade is unsuccessful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. The percentage of success can only be increased by so much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot be greater than 100%..
The success of an upgrades is also influenced by the luck of that item. All items have an initial success rate of 25% and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.
Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects may be obstructed by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
